Preparing for the Future

In my Welcome introduction I promised to tell my new friends in the WY Forum what brought me here. Paul Wright knows some of the story because it was through his kindness that I find myself like a refugee with an old cardboard suitcase of scanty possessions landing at Liverpool docks after a lucky escape from Nazi Germany.

That's my imagination getting the better of me again but the analogy with Nazi Germany is, I believe, not so far from the truth. To be more mundane, Tony Gosling, during his present reign of terror on the UK Forum, first suspended me for telling the truth & calling him a fascist on a thread and then banned me for sending him, off the Forum, a sketch by the comedian, Louis de Funes, saying it reminded me of him!

I'll let you all decide for yourselves:

Tony doesn't like me. He doesn't like a lot of people. And what has happened on the UK Forum is really bad, bad, bad. People are no longer free to speak their mind. They are creeping around, afraid of upsetting their humourless editor and more or less saying only what they think is acceptable. Meanwhile, the farce of last Wednesday's non-election goes on, the measly returns (8 Votes) still not having been declared.

Well, I have nothing to hide. I voted for Ants to take over the UK Forum, only to find that I didn't have a vote after all. But I was reassured by the principal Scottish moderator, Keith Mothersson, that the only Scot who did have a vote on the National Committee, Paul Carline who is still our Coordinator, would have reflected my own thinking. So I felt vindicated. Scotland voted so that justice should be done.

I have given Ian Neal and the National Committee my view: if the Wednesday vote was in favour of Ants then that should be put to the Committee for its ratification and then put into action: Ants should be invited, without any further ado, to become the next Administrator, Editor, Grand Panjandrum or whatever it is to be called. And more's to the point we can all cheer for, as I have said in one of my customary hyperboles, it will be like VE Day all over again, Trafalgar Square would be overflowing with happy people singing Roll Out the Barrel and Mr Attlee would be preparing the final road to a real Labour victory and the founding of the British welfare state.

In my dreams ...

The nightmare of Occupation goes on. And on and on and on. Right to the bitter end. It's incredible. And I say that as an ex-TGWU shop steward used to something a mite rougher than the middle-class gentility of what some not-so-very-nice person has called the Highgate Hub, suggesting that the Forum is run by a clique of Londoners. Is that really true? Sounds like a gross oversimplification to me by the very same not-nice folk who call all 911 Truthers loonies. But I wonder where the fire is beyond the smoke ...

As a New Scots I'm liable to get paranoid about London rule so I have to watch myself when I hear allegations about a Highgate Hub. There'll be others here more long-in-the-tooth that would know more about this. But we in Scotland always feel that we have far more in common with the good folk of England's North Country than we do with the leafy avenues of the Home Counties and yuppie South East England.

I don't get around much, living as I do up in the dour NE of Scotland in the knuckle that sticks out into the Moray Firth and the cold North Sea. It's Pension Credits these days which is better than Incap but you still have to scrimp & save for the Electric, the Cooncil Tax, the TV Licence & all the rest of that nonsense. Years ago I lived in a tiny little casita on the side of a mountain in a wild part of Spain, Extremadura. I became very Spanish anarchist in mentality & easily forgot my British habits. On returning to Britland on a visit my road tax had run out (I was running my beat-up old Cavalier on forged insurance papers) & I couldn't believe the fuss folk would make when they saw my empty windscreen! It occurred to me we didn't need to be taken over by fascists. We already were a dictatorship.

Which returns me nicely to the UK Forum. It seems that Ants and Tony are going to inherit a Forum which has divided like an amoeba into two equal versions. From then on it'll be every man for himself if you forgive the sexist pun. And, of course, every woman too. As far as Tony's ersatz forum is concerned (in my opinion he never deserved to be given it but gained it by bullying and cunning) I would be quite happy if he established it in a computer café at the extreme end of the known Universe, never to be heard of again. And yes, Tony, the answer to Life, the Universe and Granny's draws is 42 after all.

I'm more interested in the Forum that Ants and presumably the WY Collective will run. I haven't been here five minutes but, as an ageing hippy, I get good vibes about this collective and the kind generosity of folk like Paul who have opened the WY Forum to those of us who have been fucked over by the Obersturmbannfuhrer. Seems to me that starting over as the northern guardians and protectors of the UK Forum could lead to all manner of good and creative things if the collective character is faithfully adhered to and freedom once more allowed its head.

Back in the 'eighties I was part of a movement that hoped to build an alternative society run on socialist, anarchist, collective lines which we would operate in parallel with the wicked old capitalism of Thatcherite Britain. It worked for a while but perhaps Karl Marx was right when he said that it was impossible for utopian communities to exist as islands within a capitalist ocean. Inevitably wicked ol' capitalism has its way. Until that is it digs its own grave.

But I'd like to think that brave ventures such as the WY Forum has its roots in that parallel society and, indeed, in the much deeper roots of English radicalism and William Morris socialism. Those of you who have sparred with me on the UK Forum will know of my committed, pro-European sentiments. But as I reassured Paul, those sentiments are in no way the black & white oversimplification they have been misrepresented as. I remain, by nature a slighly eccentric Red-Green anarchist who believes in the total abolition of the wages system, its replacement by a moneyless society along with the banning of politicians ("Never trust a Politician," Bob Marley) and their replacement by a highly decentralised planetary global-brain computer programmed as pro-life, pro-humans-and-all-creatures-great-and-small run by a democratically rotated collective.

Perhaps Ants & the Collective might consider planning for that future right now for the time when the Meek shall inherit the Earth ...
